Chevergny's kennels contain 70 or so hunting hounds, which are tall, big-boned, slobbery beasts that are definitely not house pets. Standing almost to my hip, they like being in a huge pack.
They wanted to eat my phone.
We witnessed their repas. Their handlers lay out a long row of raw meat and cereal on the kennel floor and make the dogs wait for a moment before they are allowed to descend on the food. "Feeding frenzy" has new meaning to me.
Inside Chevergny, the salle des armes (room of weapons) displayed lots of scary / beautiful implements of war and sport.
Apparently Cervantes' work was very popular at the time the château was being renovated and images of Don Quioxte were everywhere. I loved this sculpture.
These are fossilized antlers of an ancient, elk-like beast that stood over 10 feet tall. Keith says they are over 100,000 years old.
We hit the chapel at the perfect time to witness a miracle. The painter had already illuminated the contents of Jesus' heart and then the late afternoon sun cast an eerie ray at exactly the right angle.

The antlers are mounted at the same height they would have been if the animal was standing.
ReplyDelete70 chiens! And those antlers. Castle is fascinating.
